Common causes of serious injuries in Ventura County
Highway crashes cause much of the serious harm here, especially on US-101 and the SR-126 corridor. Freight moving from the Port of Hueneme, agricultural work and steep mountain roads add risks that look different from what drivers see in a big city.
- US-101 through Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura. The main coastal freeway carries commuters, visitors and freight. Our car accident page covers the basics.
- SR-126 through Santa Paula and Fillmore. VCTC notes rising community concern over congestion and safety on this route, which runs from US-101 to Interstate 5 in Santa Clarita. See truck accident claims for crashes involving big rigs.
- Port of Hueneme freight. VCTC, the port and Caltrans study freight on US-101 and State Routes 1, 23, 33, 118, 126 and 150, where heavy trucks share lanes with cars.
- Fields, groves and packing work. The county's agricultural economy means ladders, machinery, pesticides and summer heat. Read about workplace injuries and workers' comp.
- SR-33 above Ojai. This winding mountain highway rewards caution, especially for riders. See motorcycle accidents.
Common injuries after accidents in Ventura County
Ventura County's injuries split between the highway and the field. Freeway and two-lane highway crashes cause neck, back and spinal harm, while agricultural and port work brings falls, crush injuries and heat illness. Getting care early helps both recovery and the claim.
- Neck and back injuries on US-101. Rear-end crashes in Camarillo and Oxnard traffic commonly cause whiplash and disc problems. See neck injuries and back injuries.
- Spinal and head trauma on SR-126. Collisions with big rigs or farm vehicles on a two-lane corridor carry high force and can cause spinal cord injuries. Families who lose someone may bring a wrongful death claim.
- Falls, crush injuries and heat illness in agriculture. Orchard ladders cause fractures and back injuries, machinery can crush hands and limbs, and summer field work can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
- Rider injuries on SR-33. Motorcyclists who go down on mountain curves often suffer fractures, road rash and head injuries.
Getting your crash report
The CHP's Ventura, Moorpark and Conejo Area offices write freeway reports. Oxnard, Ventura, Simi Valley, Santa Paula and Port Hueneme have their own police departments, and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office covers unincorporated areas plus Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Moorpark, Fillmore and Ojai.
Filing deadlines for Ventura County injury claims
The general deadline for an injury lawsuit is two years CCP 335.1. Claims against public agencies move much faster: a written claim is usually due in six months Gov. Code 911.2. That applies to the County of Ventura, Gold Coast Transit District, VCTC and all ten cities.
School districts and Caltrans are covered too, for example when a state highway defect played a role. After a written denial, the lawsuit deadline is generally six months from the notice Gov. Code 945.6. A minor's lawsuit clock usually waits until age 18, but the government claim deadline does not CCP 352. Check your dates on our Claim Clock.

Questions
Ventura County personal injury FAQ
I was hurt working in a Ventura County field or packing house. What are my options?
Tell your supervisor about the injury right away and ask for a workers' compensation claim form. Workers' comp usually pays medical care and part of lost wages no matter who was at fault. If a defective ladder or machine, or another company's driver, caused the harm, you may also have a separate injury claim against them. Heat illness counts as a work injury too.
A Gold Coast Transit bus was involved in my crash. What is the deadline?
Gold Coast Transit District is a public agency, so a written claim is usually due within six months of the crash (Government Code section 911.2). If the district rejects it in writing, you generally have six months from that notice to file suit (Government Code section 945.6). The same rule covers VCTC Intercity buses, the County of Ventura and its cities.
How do I get a crash report in Thousand Oaks or Camarillo?
Both cities contract with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office for police services, as do Moorpark, Fillmore and Ojai, so street crashes there are handled by the Sheriff. Freeway crashes go to the CHP Ventura, Moorpark or Conejo Area office. Oxnard, Ventura and Simi Valley have their own police departments.
Who is responsible for a crash on Highway 126?
Usually the driver who caused it, and sometimes a trucking or farm company whose vehicle was involved. If a road condition contributed, Caltrans may share responsibility, which triggers the six-month government claim deadline. We gather the CHP report, photos and witness accounts to sort out who pays.
