Common causes of serious injuries in Riverside County

Riverside County mixes crowded commuter corridors, fast desert highways, resort towns and recreation lakes. Most cases here start on the road, followed by hotel falls, boating accidents and farm injuries.

  • SR-91, SR-60, SR-71 and I-215. The CHP Riverside Area patrols these routes through Corona, Moreno Valley and Riverside, where stop-and-go traffic leads to rear-end car accident claims.
  • I-15 and SR-79 near Temecula. Wine-country visitors share these roads with commuters and commercial traffic. A big-rig crash calls for a truck accident claim.
  • I-10 through the San Gorgonio Pass. I-10 climbs through Banning and Beaumont, then crosses the Coachella Valley to Blythe. Long, fast stretches invite fatigue crashes and motorcycle accidents.
  • Desert resorts. Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells draw visitors to hotels, pools and golf. Wet pool decks can support a premises liability claim.
  • Lake Elsinore and Lake Perris. Boating and swimming accidents at these lakes can lead to wrongful death claims.
  • Farm work. Agriculture remains part of life in the Coachella and Palo Verde valleys. See our workplace injury page.

Common injuries after accidents in Riverside County

Riverside County injuries follow its roads and recreation. Freeway congestion brings whiplash and disc injuries, fast desert highways bring spinal and head trauma, and resort pools and lakes bring broken bones and drownings. Prompt care protects your health and your claim.

  • Neck and back injuries. Rear-end hits in SR-91 and SR-60 slowdowns can strain ligaments or herniate a disc. Pain often appears a day or more later, so get checked early. Read about neck injuries and back injuries.
  • Spinal cord and head injuries. Rollovers on the I-10 desert run and big-rig crashes on I-15 can fracture vertebrae or bruise the brain, sometimes with lasting effects. See spinal cord injuries.
  • Fractures from resort falls. A slip on a wet pool deck in Palm Springs or Rancho Mirage can break a wrist, hip or ankle and may need surgery and therapy.
  • Fatal lake and highway accidents. When a boating accident at Lake Elsinore or a desert head-on takes a life, the family may bring a wrongful death claim.

Getting your crash report

Freeway crash reports come from the CHP Area office that responded: Riverside, Temecula, San Gorgonio Pass in Beaumont, Indio or Blythe. The Riverside County Sheriff covers unincorporated areas, and departments such as Riverside and Corona police handle city streets.

Filing deadlines for Riverside County injury claims

You generally have two years to file an injury lawsuit CCP 335.1. Against the County of Riverside, a city, the Riverside Transit Agency or Caltrans, a written claim is usually due within six months Gov. Code 911.2.

The rule covers a county road defect in Mead Valley, a fall on a school district campus, an RTA or SunLine bus crash, an injury at an RCTC Metrolink station, and a dangerous Caltrans highway. After a written rejection, you usually have six months to sue Gov. Code 945.6. Children get no extra time on these claims CCP 352. Check your dates with the Claim Clock.

Questions

Riverside County personal injury FAQ

I was rear-ended in SR-91 traffic near Corona. What should I do first?

Call 911 if anyone is hurt and make sure the CHP or Corona police write a report. Photograph both cars, collect the other driver's insurance and any witness names, and see a doctor within a day or two. Neck and back pain from a rear-end hit often builds over the following days. Keep every bill and missed-work record.

I was hurt on an RTA bus or at a Metrolink station. Is the deadline different?

Usually, yes. The Riverside Transit Agency, SunLine and the Riverside County Transportation Commission, which runs the county's nine Metrolink stations, are public entities. A written claim is generally due within six months of the injury (Government Code section 911.2). Call early so video and maintenance records are requested quickly.

Which CHP office has my Riverside County freeway crash report?

It depends on location. The CHP Riverside Area covers most of the western county, Temecula covers I-15 and I-215 in the south, San Gorgonio Pass covers the Beaumont and Banning stretch of I-10, Indio covers the Coachella Valley and Blythe covers the eastern desert. City streets are handled by city police or the Sheriff.

I fell at a Palm Springs resort and have since flown home. Can you still help?

Yes. Visitors have the same rights as residents, and California's two-year deadline for most injury suits still applies (Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1). Report the fall to the hotel before you leave if you can, keep photos of the wet deck or floor, and save your medical records. We review your case free by phone or video.
