Common causes of serious injuries in Butte County

Butte County combines a college city, two valley highways, foothill roads and a huge reservoir. Most serious injuries come from SR-99 and SR-70 crashes, Chico bike and pedestrian collisions, and accidents at Lake Oroville and Bidwell Park.

  • SR-99 and SR-32 around Chico. The CHP Chico Area patrols both, plus the county roads around them. Crashes here drive our car accident and truck collision work.
  • SR-70, SR-149 and SR-162 near Oroville. The CHP Oroville Area patrols these routes in the south county, where fast two-lane traffic is hard on motorcycle riders.
  • Chico State. Most students walk or bike to a campus beside downtown, the university says. See bicycle and pedestrian accidents.
  • Lake Oroville. State Parks runs the recreation area, with marinas, floating campsites and trails. Falls on docks and ramps raise premises liability questions.
  • Bidwell Park and orchards. Upper Park has steep, rocky terrain, and injuries on public land follow the claim rules below. A job-site injury in a park or orchard may also be a workplace injury claim.

Common injuries after accidents in Butte County

Butte County injuries track its roads and recreation. Valley highway crashes cause neck and back harm, foothill two-lane collisions can damage the spine, and Chico bike crashes or Oroville dock falls bring head injuries and broken bones.

  • Neck strain. Rear-end collisions in SR-99 and SR-32 traffic whip the head forward and back. Stiffness can build over days, so early neck injury care matters.
  • Back and spine. Rollovers and head-ons on SR-70 and SR-162 can herniate discs or fracture vertebrae, and riders thrown on foothill curves risk spinal cord injuries. See back injuries.
  • Head injuries and fractures. Cyclists struck near Chico State and visitors who fall on wet Lake Oroville ramps often suffer concussions and broken wrists or ankles.
  • Fatal crashes. When a collision or drowning takes a life, the family may bring a wrongful death claim.

Questions

Butte County personal injury FAQ

I was hit while biking or walking near Chico State. What should I do?

Get checked by a doctor the same day, even if you feel fine, because head and neck symptoms can show up later. Ask Chico police for the report number, photograph the street and your bike, and keep any damaged helmet. The driver's insurer, and sometimes your own uninsured motorist coverage, may pay for treatment, lost work and pain.

How long do I have to file a claim against the County of Butte, the City of Chico or B-Line?

Usually six months from the injury (Government Code section 911.2). The written claim goes to the agency itself, whether that is the County, a city, the Town of Paradise or Butte Regional Transit. If it is denied in writing, you generally have six months from that notice to sue (Government Code section 945.6).

I was hurt boating or camping at Lake Oroville. Do I have a case?

Possibly. Lake Oroville State Recreation Area is a state park, so a claim about a dangerous condition of state property follows the six-month government claim rule. If another boater or a rental business caused the injury, the claim may run against them and their insurer instead. We find out who controlled the boat, dock or trail first.

How do I get a crash report from the CHP in Chico or Oroville?

The Chico Area office covers northern Butte County and the Oroville Area office covers the south. Drivers, passengers, vehicle owners and parents of injured minors can mail form CHP 190 or a letter, with a copy of photo ID, to the office that wrote the report. City street crashes are usually reported by city police.

What should I do after a head-on or rollover crash on SR-70 near Oroville?

Call 911, accept medical care at the scene and follow up with your own doctor within days. Two-lane crashes often cause back, neck and spinal injuries that worsen over time. Note the mile marker or nearest crossroad, the other driver's insurance and any witnesses. Do not give a recorded statement to the other insurer before you talk with a lawyer.
